Right off the 10 freeway, and really on its own, is Adams Coffee Shop, a daytime cafe that moonlights as a restaurant (or is it the other way around?) after 4p.m. That may explain their commitment to house baked pastries, sandwiches, and fresh squeezed juices. As you make your way inside and up to the barista bar, past the orange velvet sofa and long wooden communal table, you may be drawn to the rows of liquor and wine bottles displayed against a dark blue tile backsplash. Another clue that a full-blown restaurant lurks nearby. I order house brew compliments of Coffee Manufactory—served in cups adorned with classic cars—add half-and-half, and began typing away on my laptop. Opposite me is a crisp, white-painted brick wall fitted with magazines, newspapers, and a couple barstools. Next time I’d like to try their ‘Mocha De Abuela’ a.k.a. mocha with a kick thanks to cinnamon and cayenne. I’m prettttyyy sure that a first date was failing miserably across the table and a trio of entrepreneurs were having a meeting beside the shop’s street-facing ay window (a great seat if you can snag it!). The whole operation is a little retro—very professional yet intentionally a little funky. Case in point: outside on the street—beside some patio seating outfitted in the signature Adams turquoise color—is an old-school payphone that seems to be adopted by the coffee shop. I can’t imagine it’s in working order, but I’d love to hear the full story...
